INTERVIEW
P76
AMA HARE & HOUND & WORCS CHAMPION KURT CASELLI
STORY AND PHOTOGRAPHY BY
KIT PALMER
A
t 28 years of age, when
most motorcycle racers
are winding down their
careers, Kurt Caselli is just now
hitting his stride. Instead of slowing down and cutting back, Caselli is getting faster and piling
more on his plate, having just
finished up what was probably
his busiest and, not to mention,
most successful year racing dirt
bikes ever. He embarked on what
would be a remarkably physically
and mentally demanding journey
at the beginning of the 2011 season that had him chasing two major and radically different off-road
championships – WORCS and
AMA National Hare & Hounds totaling over 30 races and more
than 50 hours on the bike going
full tilt. Throw in three two-day
World Enduro rounds and the
International Six Days Enduro
along the way and you figure he
raced, in a span of 10 months,
upwards of 100 hours on the bike
going as fast as you can over
some of the toughest trails and
terrain this planet has to offer.
There's a reason why his friends
call him "Special K."
Caselli's ambitious endeavor paid off. When he took the
checkered flag for the last time
this year, he went home two for
two - a double champion - successfully defending his crown
in WORCS and earning his very
first overall number-one plate in
the desert. The pie was sweet75-88 Caselli Interview .indd 76
TWO-FER
IT WAS A ROUGH START FOR
KURT CASELLI, BUT WHEN
THE DUST SETTLED, TWO NEW
CHAMPIONSHIP TROPHIES
WERE ADDED TO HIS MANTLE.
Kurt Caselli challenged himself by going after
two very different championships in 2011.
And he got them both.
