CHAMPIONSHIP VOL. 55 ISSUE 38 SEPTEMBER 25, 2018 P73 after the South African came out on top of his battle with Yo- shimura Suzuki's Roger Hayden when the two came together in the closing laps. It was Scholtz' eighth podium of the season. "He [Hayden] followed me in and passed me on the second last lap," Scholtz said. "His bike is the fastest bike again. I came from so far back. There was nothing else that I could really do. I made a move. It was hard, but none of us crashed. I'm sorry that he got pushed wide." The top 10 in race one was rounded out by Roger Hayden (Yoshimura Suzuki), Jake Lewis (M4 Ecstar Suzuki), Danny Eslick (Scheibe Racing BMW), Garrett Gerloff (Monster Energy/Yama- off at Laguna," Herrin said of his back pain. "It's my lower back. Just with the amount of riding that we were doing and all the stuff that I was having to put my back through that weekend. It's been fine all year, and then here I think because of the long rights and having to manage the tire and kind of move your body in a different way… it just kind of flared up today. "I saw that I had a big gap to second, and I knew that I wasn't going to be able to keep up with Toni. So I just kind of tried to keep up with him as much as I could without making it any worse." Yamalube/Westby Racing's Mathew Scholtz finished third iii My Own Race: 11 MATHEW SCHOLTZ 3-4 SUPERBIKE As usual, I got a terrible start," Mathew Scholtz said after race two. "So, the first couple of laps were kind of hairy, but cool. We made some changes to the traction control overnight, and it helped me run about a half-second quicker today. I got up to fourth, and I could see the front group. I started closing in on them, but the tires dropped off. I was at the absolute limit, so I had to settle in and take fourth today. It's been a good season for me, but I'm hungry for more. I wanted to end up in the top three in the championship, and I missed that mark and finished fourth in points. So, I'm a little disappointed, but I'm looking forward to coming back strong next year." 53 VALENTIN DEBISE 3-3 SUPERSPORT "To be back on the podium is good, and my pace was good, too—I was able to stay with the two front guys," Valentin Debise said. "But honestly, I didn't have anything to try with them. My goal was just to stay there, be smooth, and work on my body position, and everything worked out good. I'm very happy. Thanks to my M4 Ecstar Suzuki team. They gave me a great bike as always." 95 JD BEACH 2-2 SUPERSPORT "Today was a crazy race with lots of red flags," JD Beach said after race one. "By the time we had finished the race we had 27 laps on the tires. First off, I hope all the downed riders are okay. Once we finally got going it was a ten-lap sprint and Hayden [Gillim] was riding great. We had a ton of pressure from behind with Valentin [Debise] giving me no breathing room. I made a big mistake going into the museum turn and got into the dirt and almost lost the front. Hayden was able to get a gap on me but we could run him back down, run our fastest lap on the last lap and learned some lines." Bobby Fong leads Honda teammate Petersen in race one. Will either of these two riders be back in 2019?
