Pictured on the cover of Cycle News 20 years ago was Mick
Doohan after winning the Catlunyan Grand Prix… We had a preview
of the upcoming AMA Superbike National at Las Vegas. We asked
the question: Who will it be? Doug Chandler or Ben Bostrom?...
The final round of the 500cc MX World Champion decided the 1998
champion, which ended up being Sebastien Tortelli, who trailed
Stefan Everts by eight points going into the race.
Our cover story 30 years ago was the Motocross des Nations from
Italy. Pictured on the cover were the happy winners: Team USA's
Jeff Ward, Ron Lechien and Rick Johnson. It was America's
eighth straight MXdN victory… Not far away in Mende, France,
the ISDE had just finished up with the host country taking its first-
ever victory with members Stephane Peterhansel, Giles Lalay,
Thierry Charbonier, Jean Paul Charles, Alain Olivier and Marc
Morales. Team USA was ninth.
