VOL. 55 ISSUE 37 SEPTEMBER 18, 2018 P57 NCNEIL SURPRISES Jarryd McNeil, the nine-time X Games medalist, competed in Costa Mesa, and he jumped right into the pro class. He qualified into the 26-rider night show via the morning qualifiers. The freestyle specialist failed to qualify for the main event but surprised a lot of the other riders and fans with his off-road skills on the demanding track. And McNeil was clearly having a good time chal- lenging himself and still had some fun throwing in a heel-clicker-to-no- handed-lander to end the afternoon practice session. WHO IS #96? Cristobal Guerrero had a lot of people asking: "Who is the number 96 on the Yamaha?" He's from Spain and competes in the FIM SuperEn- duro World Championship, where he finished seventh earlier this year. He came to the U.S. to do some riding and training and borrowed a bike from Yamaha to race at Costa Mesa. He had to go to the LCQ to make it to the main event but then put in a great ride to finish an impressive fifth. LEADERBOARD Two races into the six-race series, Colton Haaker has taken over the Super EnduroCross (Pro) champi- onship lead with 51 points. Cody Webb is second with 47 and Trystan Hart is third with 32 points. Haaker and Webb are the dominant riders and more often finish 1-2, making it difficult for either to open much of a points gap, making it significant for Hart to wedge himself between the former champions, taking some points away from the defending champion. Briefly... the fastest time during the day only to go down right at the end of his hot lap. That meant he had a last-place gate pick coming into the heat races of the evening program. By now, the track conditions were unpredict- able, and it would ultimately come down to a contest of who could adapt quickest. After topping the afternoon's hot lap, Webb kept the momentum going by winning the first of the two pro- class heat races, qualifying straight to the main. The other qualifying positions went to Benjamin Herrera, Trystan Hart, Noah Kepple, Cooper Abbott and Dustin McCarthy who filled out the top six positions and went straight to the main. In heat two, despite a second-row start, Haaker quickly moved to the front and walked away with the win in the second heat race. Also getting into the main Opening-round winner Cody Webb had to settle for third.
