LOOKING BACK
Fifty years ago, we asked the question: What is the triple threat? Three-
cylinder motorcycles were coming and we showed you some of the
latest, like the BSA Rocket Three, which was pictured on the cover…
We covered the Shamrocks California State Championship Hare &
Hound and the win went to Norton-mounted Mike Patrick… We tested
the new Maico X4A 360cc motocrosser. We said it was "one of the
finest pieces of out-of-the-crate-racing hardware available"… Mert
Lawwill won the 11-Mile National Flat Track in Salinas, California.
Bob Hannah at the Motocross des Nations in Gaildorf, Germany,
was our main image on the cover 40 years ago. Hannah, Chuck Sun,
Tommy Croft and Rick Burgett gave Team USA fourth place. Both
Hannah and Sun nabbed second-place finishes in the two motos, while
Finland's Heikki Mikkola won both of them, but it was the Russian
team that took home the gold… Kenny Roberts won the F750 World
Championship round at Laguna Seca.
