A
merican Flat Track returned to the Illinois State Fair-
grounds for the 100th running of the Springfield Mile.
Arguably the most prestigious races of the year are the
two events held on the big mile oval and despite adverse track
conditions, the tight racing in the 25-lap National showed why.
It has been a star-crossed year for Bryan Smith as the Indian
Motorcycle/Allstate Motorcycle Insurance Indian Scout FTR750
rider has had to fight through his injuries from several big crash-
es. With the season winding down, Smith was adamant that he
was going to win the Springfield Mile for the tenth time. In order
to accomplish that feat, he would have to overcome the most
dominant rider currently in the series, along with the winner of
the May race and a fast rising star in the series.
