LOOKING BACK
The Peoria TT was featured on the cover of
Cycle News 50 years ago. The race was filled
with talent but it was Bart Markel who stood
out above all others. He took the win over
Dick Mann and Sonny Burres… We also had
coverage of the AMA National Championship
Short Track from Hinsdale, Illionois, where Fred
Nix came away with a kiss from the trophy girl…
We covered the Tijuana TT Tourney from B.C.
Mexico, and one of the top riders that day was
11-year-old Earl Roloff Jr.
It was 40 years ago that Kenny Roberts ended Barry Sheene's reign
at the top of the 500cc World Championship and became the first
American to earn the number-one plate in 500cc grand prix road racing
history. Roberts sealed the deal with a third-place finish in Germany...
The Indy Mile doubleheader produced two winners—Garth Brow
and Hank Scott… In the final round of the AMA 500cc National MX
Championship in St. Petersburg, Florida, the "Lumberjack" Rick Burgett
claimed the overall win and the 1978 Championship.
