MOTOCROSS LUCAS OIL AMA PRO MOTOCROSS CHAMPIONSHIPS ROUND 11 / AUGUST 18, 2018 BUDDS CREEK, MARYLAND / BUDDS CREEK RACEWAY P60 Anderson's teammate Phil Ni- coletti got the holeshot in moto two but was immediately rel- egated to fourth, as Barcia took the lead in front of Musquin and Roczen, and then Musquin snuck by Barcia for the lead soon thereafter. Baggett and Tomac each pushed Nicoletti back a spot after a few laps, while Roczen finally found a way around Barcia for second. Things settled that way for a few laps until Tomac caught fire, first going around Baggett for fourth and then having Barcia gift him third when he washed out in a turn (remounting sixth). As if he were riding on a dif- ferent track altogether, Tomac caught and passed Musquin in barely over a lap, putting in lap times between 2:07 and 2:09, while Musquin and Roczen were circulating in the 2:11s and 2:12s. With that kind of closing speed, neither Musquin nor Roczen had much time to even know Tomac was there, much less try and prevent a pass. iii My Own Race: 94 KEN ROCZEN 2ND 450MX (1-3) "The first moto was great," said Ken Roczen. "I had a good battle with Marvin [Mus- quin] going through most the race and once there were only five laps left, I just told myself that I better pull this off and get the win. I was trying to just keep it steady, but if Marvin was still close behind me, I was going to try and put on a charge the last couple laps; luckily I didn't really have to. It was my shot at the overall today, but unfortunately I got sick halfway through the week and definitely wasn't feeling it this morning and it caught up with me in the second moto. I just ran out of steam at the end and let those guys get by me. I gave it my all out there and unfortunately it wasn't enough for the overall again, but I just want to get this season over with healthy and giving each race all that I have—today, that was it. We're going to take what we've learned to regroup for this off-season, and come back to crush it next year. I'm happy with where I'm at this season, but at the same time, I'm a winner and I want to win. I try to put it into perspective because I was here last year hurt and I would've taken a day of racing sick and in the heat over anything, so to be back a year later fighting for wins and getting second overall is pretty dang good." STEAMY It was brutally hot at the Budds Creek MX National, with a heat index of nearly 100 degrees. In the 450MX class, it looked like the heat adversely affected the two top racers from Europe—Ken Roczen and Marvin Musquin—with their late-race slides down the running order in the second moto, but in reality, Roczen was bat- tling a cold all week and surprised even himself with a moto-one win, and Musquin had a "big one" (a big crash) on the Tuesday prior to the Budds Creek National and said he was happy just to be out there racing at all. Still, the heat didn't help. NUMBER 9 RJ Hampshire became the ninth moto winner of the year in the 250MX class so far in 2018 when he won the second moto at Budds Creek. Even better, he took his first-ever profes- sional overall win. And then even bet- ter than that (at least for his team), his teammate Chase Sexton ended up second overall on the day, making it a Geico Honda 1-2. The cherry on top? They did it at Budds Creek, which is a short driving distance from the Geico Insurance headquarters, based just outside Washington DC. (Geico is an acronym for Government Employee Insurance Company, as Geico got its start insuring employees of the federal government.) 125S ONLY Ty Masterpool won the 125cc All-Star Race at Budds Creek over Darryn Durham and Jack Rogers, but Dur- ham was DQ'd for racing on a 150. He apparently said he didn't know you couldn't race a 150. In fairness, the rules from 125cc Dream Race events in past years allowed up to a 150cc motorcycle, but that's not true for this year. Masterpool's best lap time was five seconds faster than anybody else's on the official results (excluding Durham). Rogers was offi- cially credited with second place over Temecula, California's Ryan Hughes. TOUGH DAY TLD/Red Bull KTM's Jordon Smith dropped out of the second 250MX Briefly...
