FERRIS
FINISHES
THEM OFF IN
AUSTRALIA
E
arlier in the week Dean Ferris
announced he was heading
abroad to race internationally for
2019, his parting gift to his CDR
Yamaha Monster Energy Team was
to stamp his authority on the 2018
Australian MX Nationals by claim-
ing another win and make it 10
victories from 10 contested.
And, in arguably his most domi-
nant display for the season, Ferris
was in a league of his own on a
track that sorted the men from the
boys, as Coolum was at its gnarli-
est and ugliest. His winning margin
in race one was 37 seconds and
race two saw a gap of 34 seconds
back to the second placed rider.
"Last year I won nine of the 10
rounds and I made a little deal with
myself this year to aim to win every
round," Ferris said. "Today I was
able to achieve that and I'm super
stoked to be able to do it with this
team of people behind me at CDR
Yamaha Monster Energy as well as
what could be my final round of mo-
tocross in Australia for some time.
"The track today was tough, as
the sand was deep and the ruts
made it a real challenge. Physi-
cally, it was as demanding a track
we have had in some time so I'm
thankful for the work my trainer,
Guy Andrews, and I have put in.
"Thank you to WEM for another
great series as well as the event
sponsors. I'm honored to have won
this championship three times now
and it was something I dreamed
about as a kid when I first started
racing on a YZ85.
"Finally, a huge thank you to
my family, girlfriend, my mechanic
Aiden who is prepared to do what-
ever it takes and the CDR Yamaha
Monster Energy Team who make
it feel like a second home at the
race track."
Mitch Evans took second
overall in the season finale, while
Caleb Ward, Callum Norton and
Rhys Carter rounded out the top
five overall.
In the final championship stand-
ings, Ferris tallied an unbeatable
699 points, followed by Evans with
567 and Luke Clout with 547. Ward
was fourth with 506 points, and
Ferris' Yamaha teammate was fifth
with 502 points.
Ferris hopes to land a ride in
America for 2019 but not before
finishing out the 2018 season com-
peting in the upcoming Australian
Supercross Championship. Ferris
has raced in America before as a
member of the Red Bull KTM team
in 2014 but his stint with the team
was hampered by injuries. He also
rode the High Point National MX
in the 450MX class last year and
finished second in the first moto.
In MX2, Wilson Todd (Serco
Yamaha) claimed his first Austra-
lian MX title. He officially clinched
the title after placing sixth in the
first moto, and then he cruised to
a stress-free fourth in the second
moto.
Kyle Webster (Penrite Pirelli
CRF Honda Racing) took the day's
overall win. Jay Wilson (Yamalube
Yamaha Racing) won the second
moto and took second overall. CN
