VOL. 55 ISSUE 32 AUGUST 14, 2018 P33 TRUMP TWEETS SUPPORT OF HARLEY-DAVIDSON BOYCOTT C ontinuing his attacks against Harley-Davidson, President Trump tweeted his sup- port of a boycott of the American motorcycle manufacturer if it moves any more production overseas. The Sunday tweet came a day after the president was joined by "Bikers for Trump" at his New Jersey golf club in Bedminster on Saturday, August 11: "Many @harleydavidson owners plan to boycott the company if manufacturing moves over- seas. Great! Most other companies are coming in our direction, including Harley competitors. A really bad move! U.S. will soon have a level playing field, or better." Bikers for Trump recently had a presence at the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally in South Dakota, where Founder Chris Cox spoke with the New York Times about Harley-Davidson's plans to shift some of its production overseas to circumvent tariffs. According to Cox, they have an issue with company's CEO Matt Levatich, not necessarily the brand. "We want Harley-Davidson to survive this storm, but the person they got steering this ship is way out of touch," said Cox. "They've been planning [to shift production overseas] for a long time and for him to suggest that was because of Donald Trump and the tariffs is absurd." Harley-Davidson has not offered a response to the president's latest attack. CN Harley-Davidson continues to draw the ire of the president, who now supports a boycott of the brand.
