They go side to side or for- ward," said Carver. "I sat right there on his tail. I was waiting for him to make a mistake or see where I could make a drive on him." When no mistake came, Carver made a frantic charge off turn four on the last lap. Carver's timing was good, but he fell just short of his goal, as Mees held on by about half a bike length or 0.032 of a sec- ond. "We were close. Close again to the champ," said Carver. Fisher rode in sixth almost the entire race before losing the position to Bron- son Bauman with five laps to go. MAN WITH A PLAN AND A VAN The "Man with a Plan and a Van" Hayden Gillim was back, making his second start on his Indian/Cycle World/S&S Scout FTR750. The MotoAmerica road race star finished right on Henry Wiles' heels in 12th. MAKING THE MAINS Australian Mick Kirkness continues his American tour aboard the Harley- Davidson of Salina/Young Henry's Brewing's Harley-Davidson XR750. Kirkness has qualified for each of the Nationals he has run so far, finishing 18th. He will be headed on to Peoria next in an effort to keep the vener- able Harley in the mix. BEST OF THE BEST Over the course of the last five or six years, the Black Hills Speedway has turned into one of the best tracks on the AFT schedule, this year was no different. "The track was amazing. This is one of the best tracks on the circuit," said Carver. Briefly... (L-R) Carver, Mees and Bryan Smith celebrate on the podium. This was Smith's first podium in four races.
