Bryan Smith (Indian Motor- cycle/Allstate Motorcycle Insur- ance, Indian Scout FTR750) returned to action for the first time in a month and finished a solid third, his fourth podium of an injury-plagued season. They go side to side or for- ward," said Carver. "I sat right there on his tail. I was waiting for him to make a mistake or see where I could make a drive on him." When no mistake came, Carver made a frantic charge off turn four on the last lap. Carver's timing was good, but he fell just short of his goal, as Mees held on by about half a bike length or 0.032 of a sec- ond. "We were close. Close again to the champ," said Carver. "Keeping him honest and right there on him." The MotoAmerica road race star finished right on Henry Wiles' heels in 12th. Kirkness has qualified for each of the Nationals he has run so far, finishing 18th. He will be headed on to Peoria next in an effort to keep the vener- able Harley in the mix. BEST OF THE BEST Over the course of the last five or six years, the Black Hills Speedway has turned into one of the best tracks on the AFT schedule, this year was no different.
