POLARIS ON SHIFTING INDIAN
MOTORCYCLE MANUFACTURING
TO POLAND
T
ariff talk may have drifted out
of the headlines, but it is still
very much on the minds of U.S.
motorcycle manufacturers such
as Indian Motorcycle. Parent
company Polaris Industries made
a statement in June that it was
considering shifting some of its
Indian Motorcycle production to
Poland as a means to circumvent
cost increases from the escalat-
ing trade war with the European
Union. Similar to Harley-David-
son's plan to offshore production
to avert tariffs, the statement
sparked outrage from those ac-
cusing the company of shipping
U.S. jobs overseas.
The Associated Press re-
ported that Polaris CEO Scott
Wine expanded on the topic of
tariffs during a telephone news
conference about the company's
second-quarter earnings. Wine
explained that production of
Indian motorcycles for the U.S.
market would remain in the U.S.,
at the Spirit Lake, Iowa plant,
which employs around 500
people. The company also states
