ROAD RACE
ROUND 6 / JULY 20-22, 2018
UTAH MOTORSPORTS CAMPUS / TOOLE, UTAH
P78
MOTOAMERICA ROAD RACING CHAMPIONSHIP
in the title race, meaning even if
Elias won all the remaining rac-
es, all Beaubier would need is to
take consistent podium places
to seal his third MotoAmerica
Superbike Championship title.
"I was able to get around Toni
in the first couple of corners,"
Beaubier said. "I just wanted to
put my head down and try to go
from the beginning. It's pretty
tough to race that guy in the last
couple laps. We were able to do
it. I came around the last sec-
tion and I saw yellow flags (for
Elias' crash). I saw the pit board
MotoAmerica Superbike Cham-
pion charged to the front and
began to pull away from Elias,
who suffered his second crash
of the weekend while in pursuit
on lap six.
It was a monumental mo-
ment in the 2018 champion-
ship. Beaubier thus cruised to a
4.2-second victory over Gerloff
ahead of Lewis, Mathew Scholtz
(Yamalube/Westby Racing
Yamaha YZF-R1), and Roger
Hayden (Yoshimura Suzuki
Factory Racing) in fifth. The win
handed Beaubier a 49-point lead
Beaubier). He was fast. Very
persistent. His pace was a little
bit faster than mine. I was play-
ing my cards at the end, and I
found my moment. I could pass
him. The last two, three corners,
we had a little bit of trouble, but I
could win the race."
Race two would not be the
dream double Elias and Suzuki
hoped for to pull them back into
real championship contention.
Beaubier knew he'd lost a battle
he should have won in race one,
and he wasn't going to let it hap-
pen again. The former two-time
Toni Elias (1) tries
a different braking
method while chasing
Beaubier in race two.
