P130 50 Years Ago AUGUST 15, 1968 LOOKING BACK The Castle Rock TT National took center stage 50 years ago. Winner Skip Van Leeuwen was pictured on the cover, as were Mert Lawwill, Sonny Burres and Dan Haaby… Steve Staats ignored the 100-degree temperatures and ran off with the win at the Jack Rabbits European Scrambles in the California desert… Sammy Tanner topped Class-A speedway action at Whiteman Stadium in Pacoima… Eleven-year-old Earl Roloff Jr. topped the 100cc Novice main during scrambles racing at Fremont Raceway in California. Broc Glover was the star on the cover of Cycle News 40 years ago. He was the big winner at the 125cc U.S. GP at Mid-Ohio. Glover won both motos, taking the overall ahead of Garard Rond and Marty Moates… Hank Scott had little difficulty winning the Sacramento Mile; Steve Morehead was second and Korky Keener third… We profiled 19-year-old road racer Randy Mamola… Bruce Ogilvie was one of the big winners at the Viewfinders Dual European Scrambles in Red Mountain, California. 40 Years Ago AUGUST 2, 1978 Jim Rice was the top amateur racer at the Castle Rock TT 50 years ago. Mick Doohan chalked up his 50th career GP win at Sachsenring in 1998 .
