IN THE WIND P32 JAMES COWTON KILLED IN SOUTHERN 100 CRASH I n what has been a terrible time for road racing, James Cowton is the latest rider to have lost his life after he succumbed to injuries sustained in a crash at the Southern 100 on the Isle of Man, July 12. Cowton, 25, was riding a McAdoo Racing Kawasaki ZX-6R when he was involved in a four- rider crash that has also landed Isle of Man TT winner Ivan Linton in the hospital. Cowton joins William Dunlop, Adam Lyon and Dan Kneen to have been killed in action this year, Linton and Steve Mercer both in critical conditions follow- ing their accidents at the TT and Southern 100, respectively. A statement from orga- nizers read: "The Southern 100 MCRC, organizers of the Southern 100 International Road Races, regret to announce that following an incident involv- ing four-competitors at Sta- dium Bends during the 600cc Challenge race, Driffield rider, James Cowton succumbed to his injuries. [Of] the other riders involved, Ivan Lintin is in a critical condition, whilst Jamie Coward has shoulder injuries and Mickey Evans leg and arm injuries. "Southern 100 Racing extends it sincere condolences to family, relatives and friends of James Cowton at this very sad time. The organizers are carrying out a full investigation in conjunction with Isle of Man Constabulary into the circumstances of the inci- dent on behalf of the Coroner of Inquests." CN KNOXVILLE OHV RECREATION AREA RE-OPENS T he Bureau of Land Management Ukiah (Cali- fornia) Field Office is re-opening the Knoxville Recreation Area and portions of the Cache Creek Management Area, as the County Fire no longer poses a public-safety risk in these areas. All BLM-managed public land in the Knoxville Recreation Area has been re-opened to the pub- lic, including the Knoxville Off-Highway Vehicle Recreation Area, Northside Staging Area and Hunting Creek Campground. The Knoxville Recre- ation Area encompasses roughly 24,000 acres of public land in Lake, Napa and Yolo counties. CN The BLM has given the okay to re-open the Knoxville OHV Area, in Ukiah, California, which had been closed by wildfires. James Cowton, 25, was touted as a rising star of road racing.
