Defending AMA Superbike National Champion Thomas Stevens crashed out of th e first Twin 50 in th e chicane while battling with his former team ma te James. The Floridian escaped without injury, but he was for ced to start from th e 15th row o n Sunday. Joining him a t the back of th e field were Vance & Hines' LUTy Schwa rzbac h and th ree-rim e Worl d Ch ampion Freddie Spencer. Schwarzb ach also crash ed in the first Twin 50, su ffering han d injuries alo ng the way. The third finger o n the Texan 's left hand was ground to the bo ne a nd he received a skin gra ft, yet he still planned o n being ready for the Da yton a 200 on Sundav: he too would start from the back. Spen cer's problems were mechanical. H is Two Brothers Ra cin g Honda RC 30 was plagued with clutch problems and he was forced out of the seco nd Twin, 50 after co mp leting onl y a single lap . H e'll start the 200 from row 17. For Pol en. thou gh . li lli e went wrong as he cruised to the wi n in wha t was the fastest of th e two heat races. "We won o ur Twin 50 last year, but went on ly one lap in the 200," Po len sa id. " Hopefu lly, we'll do a lot bett er this tim e. We went most of th e race at a 53 pa ce (1:53). I think we ca n co mforta bly run bett er than that in the race. I go t a prett y go od start and they've fixed th e cl utch from last year so I wo n ' t run into th e same chain problems. " French Can adian Pi co tte was naturall y p leased with hi s performance. " I' m very happ y," he said. "I feel a bit bad [or Sro u (Ru ssell).
