At th e sta rt o f moto o ne, Steve Fern a nd ez
co nt ro lled the field in to (he first tu rn just
ahead of Ra ndy Owen. Kobayash i was a slow
starter but worked h is Suzuki wit h in stri ki ng
d ista nce o f Ow en rat her qu ickl y. T he Ca rlsbad circui t wa s especia lly tri cky, as rai n had
m uddied th e low lyin g areas , a nd the high
spots were dry and slic k. Non e of thi s seemed
to bo ther Koba yashi . as he mo tored pa st Owen
for second. Ferna ndez, how ever, was too far
a head for Kob ayash i to catc h, as he went 10
the finish well ahea d of Kobayash i. Pi to
Pando had n ipped Ow en fo r third a t the
finis h.
Fernandez aga in gra bbed the ea rly lead at
(he sta rt o f mo to two , wi th Pand o a nd
Ko bayash i in tow . Kob ayash i qu ickl y shot
past Pa ndo , and at the ha lfway po int was o n ly
inches awa y fro m Fern andez a nd the two

nai led the holeshot with Wyn Kern ri gh t
behi nd h im . Barton a nd Kern passed eac h
o ther several ti mes unti l lat e inthe race when
Kern got a n at tire and Barton 's clutch basket
blew up o n th e sa me lap. They were so far
ahea d of the rest of the field , that Barto n
li mped ho me the win ner with Kern foll ow in g
for second.
In the seco nd moto, Barton and Kern fought
for th e lea d agai n bu t Barton held on for the
wi n ahead of Ker n , bu t Kern gOl th e overa ll

field , the racing behi nd was tight between

Perf. Cycle-sponsored J am ie Riker was first
o ff the line and easi ly wa lked a way from th e
rat of th e field . Riker led th e 12-la p race for
ni ne la ps when Rod ney Fee ca me from a lmos t
a hal f a lap down and passed R iker o n lap

the first turn to gether. Fry and Mo ur e batt led
for th e lead and pu lled away from Lyon s, wh o
was then passed on lap five by Bob Viscarra
to ta ke over thi rd. T he race ended wit h Fry
tak ing the wi n.

Visca rra , Moure and Lyon s a ll o ff the lin e

the 10 laps.
