LOOKING BACK
The 10-Mile Charity Newsies (Ohio Newsboys
Association) National Championship made
front-page news 50 years ago. Triumph-
mounted Gary Nixon came through with the
victory… At Saddleback Park, we covered
the Firecracker International Motocross that
included Torsten Hallman, Bill Nilsson, John
DeSoto, Russ Darnell and J.N. Roberts.
When the dust had settled, it was Hallman who
stood out with the first-place trophy in hand…
In road racing action, George Kerker won
the Heavy Production class at Orange County
International Raceway in California.
Terry Clark (44) and Rick Burgett got a little close during the AMA/
Mr. PiBB 500cc National MX at Mt. Morris. Burgett came away with
the overall win; Honda's Jimmy Ellis won both 250cc motos… Jay
Springsteen edged out Steve Eklund for the win at the Castle Rock TT
in Washington… Kenny Roberts regained control of the 250cc World
Championship after winning in Assen; Johnny Cecotto won the 500cc
class… We featured an interview with Gary Scott… We showed you
some of the factory MX bikes from the AMA Nationals.
