MOTOCROSS
LUCAS OIL AMA PRO MOTOCROSS CHAMPIONSHIPS
ROUND 6 / JUNE 30, 2018
THE WICK 338 / SOUTHWICK, MASSACHUSETTS
P62
450MX
Anybody who has won a FIM Motocross World Championship
very likely is good in the sand. The same can be said of many
racers from Florida. We all knew before the Southwick race
that Eli Tomac (Monster Energy Kawasaki) is also very good
in the sand, as is Justin Barcia (Monster Energy Yamaha). The
Southwick National could've gone all kinds of ways, but the
way it went ended Tomac's 2018 undefeated overall win streak.
Justin Bogle (AutoTrader/Yoshimura/JGR Suzuki) got the
holeshot in both motos at Southwick, his first race back since
the San Diego Supercross. He was, however, immediately
shuffled back in moto one as former World Champion Ken
Roczen (Honda HRC) took over the lead and Barcia sneaked
into second. A few laps later, just as Musquin, another former
world champion, began putting pressure on Barcia, the Ya-
maha rider went by Roczen, and Musquin followed suit. Only
a few turns later, Tomac also got by Roczen as the four-way
battle for the lead picked up steam. Barcia held Musquin off
for almost two laps before Musquin finally made the pass
HOT, HOT, HOT
Southwick was a warm one this year,
which isn't usually the case, but also
isn't unprecedented. The heat index was
about 102 degrees (F) as the first 250MX
moto went off. Between the humidity, little
downtime between motos and the gruel-
ing and rough track, it made for a brutal
day of racing.
MARCHBANKS MISSES
SOUTHWICK
Despite being publicly hopeful about racing
at Southwick after missing the Tennessee
round with a strained MCL in his knee,
which he suffered at High Point, Garrett
Marchbanks (Monster Energy/Pro Circuit
Kawasaki) ended up missing Southwick as
he continues to recover from the injury.
Briefly...
Marvin Musquin (25) leads first-moto winner Eli Tomac (1).
