H.R. 857 MOVES FORWARD;
GOOD NEWS FOR
CALIFORNIA OFF-ROADERS
T
he California Off-Road Recreation and Con-
servation Act (H.R. 857) has passed the U.S.
House of Representatives. The AMA supports this
bill, sponsored by U.S. Rep. Paul Cook (R-Calif.).
The bill would establish or expand six Off-
Highway Vehicle Recreation Areas in the California
desert. Other areas would be designated as wil-
derness, primarily within these wilderness study
areas and Death Valley National Park. H.R. 857
also would protect OHV users by ensuring that
OHV areas cannot be closed by administrative ac-
tion. The bill would add about 39,000 acres to the
National Park System at Joshua Tree National Park
and Death Valley National Park. The bill also would
designate about 18,000 acres of federal land as
the Alabama Hills National Scenic Area, restricting
large-scale projects, while preserving existing rec-
reational and commercial uses. Motorized vehicle
use would be unaffected. CN
CHRIS
FILLMORE'S
RECORD-
BREAKING RUN
2
017 Pikes Peak International Hill Climb
Champion Chris Fillmore switched to
the Middleweight category for the 2018
event, and used all his experience and
guile to smash the class record and finish a
remarkable third overall.
The Michigan-born rider used KTM's new 790 Duke to great effect, claiming the class win and setting
the bar at 10:04.038, some 30 seconds faster than the previous record set by Codie Vahsholtz in 2017.
Check out this remarkable footage edited by Cole Kirkpatrick of Fillmore and the little 790 Duke roar-
ing to the top of America's Mountain during the 2018 Pikes Peak International Hill Climb. CN
