LOOKING BACK
Our cover story 50 years ago was the
Mini-Roadrace National held at a scaled-
down Heidelberg Raceway in western
Pennsylvania. Held on a makeshift mini road-
race track as an experiment, racing couldn't
help but be close. A young Walter Fulton
took his first national win… Saddleback
Park held the Antelope Rambler's second
motocross at the track and attracted a large
turnout of racers, including Chuck Minert
who won the Expert class just ahead of Lou
Peterson and Eddie Mulder.
We featured Jim "The Animal" Fishback on the cover 40 years ago.
Fishback fired up the San Bernardino crowd by coming away with the
win… Steve Eklund captured his third straight AMA Grand National
Championship/Camel Pro win at the San Jose Mile… It was a wet one at
the RedBud National MX in Michigan; Kent Howerton and Rick Burgett
came away with the wins… Scott Burnworth was the top rider at the
GNC Superbowl Amateur National Supercross… Randy Mamola won the
AFM Golden Gate Challenge Road Race.
