home-field advantage]! [AMA]
District 38 is way different than
anything; it's a lot like northern
Baja, a lot like San Felipe,"
Morgan said. "It's wide-open
and you've got to know how to
read terrain and see those road
crossings coming up or a berm
track or whatever it is out here."
After wrapping up the Open A
championship in both the WHS
and H&H, Statley decided to
make the Rattlesnake Chase
his Pro-class debut and what a
debut it was.
"I got a first-kick start off the
line so I was midpack," Moto-
world of El Cajon/DP Racing/
Precision Concepts YZ450F-
mounted Statley recalled. "By
the time I hit the [dunes], I was
battling for third with Nick Bur-
son."
Statley and Burson battled the
first lap, but with Burson more
concerned about the champion-
ship and getting his FMF/Preci-
sion Concepts/Klim 480 RR
safely to the finish, he opted to
let Statley go. "By lap three and
four, I'd look back every once in
a while and I didn't see anybody
and I just started to get com-
fortable and get in my groove,"
Statley said.
"I didn't think [the pressure of
the championship] would affect
me too much, but it did," Burson
confessed. "I wanted to put in
two good laps and see where I
was because I just needed to be
near Justin Bonita, within three
or four places unless he won.
"It was weird. I didn't ride hard
all day.
"I was really surprised, actu-
ally, where I finished on the day,
coming in third. I don't feel I
rode [fast enough] to [get] third
place."
He added, "It feels good to
finally get it done."
Rick's Custom Shutters &
Blinds Yamaha-mounted Smith
was a solid but solitary fourth
with IRC Tires Yamaha rider
Bonita fifth in his first D38 race.
Austin Serpa won 250cc A and
earned sixth overall followed
by FMF Pro 250 winner Dante
Oliveira, who clinched that
class championship in doing so.
Purvines Racing Beta's Damon
Bush and Open A's James Sha-
fer and Brad Millikan rounded
out the top 10 overall.
Mark Kariya
Dante Oliveira
won the FMF Pro
250 class again,
thus wrapping
up the class
championship.
The Purvines Racing Beta crew
celebrates Nick Burson's third
overall, which was enough to lock up
the number one plate for the season.
