VOL. 53 ISSUE 35 SEPTEMBER 7, 2016 P21 backed Nic Garvin, who, in taking third on the day, recorded his first-ever pro podium. Garvin pushed through the field to phys- ically outlast competitors who would drop back after crashes, broken bikes and race-ending injuries. "Getting a good start is always good in a desert race, and I think that it helped me today," Garvin said. "I can't wait to call my dad; he is going to be so proud. We have worked so hard to get here and I can't even de- scribe the feeling." After collapsing at the finish line, Garvin cleaned himself up to be joined on the podium by his grandmother who, he explained, "has traveled the country to support him and it was only fitting that she got up there with him." In the FMF 250 Pro class, only three riders kept pace to get in five laps with the leaders. With a commanding lead in his class, FMF/RPM/KTM racing's Dante Oliveira finished sixth overall physically and was more than 10 minutes ahead of his next closest competitor. Rounding out the podium in the FMF 250 Pro class were SRT Off-Road's JT Baker and JCR Honda's Jarret Megla. The two also finished 11th and 12th overall, respectively, just 20 seconds from one another. Earlier in the day the Women and 60-Plus classes took to an abbreviated course, which proved to be a challenge for the racers. Continuing her series dominance, Faultline Power- sports/GOT-backed Sophia Oliveira recorded her fifth win of the season, besting 60-Plus- class winner Cordis Brooks, and fellow class competitors Sharon Mowell and Stephanie Giroux, who rounded out the Women's podium. The win for Brooks was his third of the season and propelled him to the top of the points chase with a four-point margin and only two rounds remaining. The early Youth race saw Mason Mathies dominate in the Supermini class, taking a wire-to-wire victory with a nearly 10-minute margin over Clayton Roberts and Bradley East. Ryan Sanders 1.
