LOOKING BACK
young Adam Cianciarulo. Having
grown up with social media, he understands it and it shows. But the
bottom line is that he's personable
and that personality comes across in
what he does online.
There's not a better motocrosser
in the world than Ryan Villopoto,
but you won't find him on the list of
those ranked in the top 100. In fact,
he only just squeezed into the top
20 in the motocross segment – sitting between Blake Williams and
Cole Seeley. Villopoto isn't that active in social media and he definitely
doesn't give you much insight into
what it's like being Ryan Villopoto.
But that's likely because he's so focused on winning races that things
like social media don't mean that
much to him. And as long as he continues to dominate, who can blame
him. When you're the best, social
media just might not be as important, or needed, to you as it is to others. Since the other dominator in the
AMA Motocross series, Eli Tomac,
is ranked even lower than Villopoto
we may be on to something here.
Fast on track, slow to Tweet?
So what does the future hold in
regard to racers and social media:
How about two-rider teams where
one rider is hired because of his
ability to win and the other rider is
hired because he/she has made
themselves invaluable because of
their social media popularity.
Don't laugh. #couldbetrue. CN

Mert Lawwill worked hard for the Indy Mile win
and was rewarded with a front-page photo. Lawwill, however, had to share the cover with a naked female motorcyclist spotted in the hills of
California. The shoeless girl was wearing nothing but a helmet and body paint. The 1000 mph
speed limit could only mean one thing – Bonneville time… Hakan Andersson was the first new 250 MX World
champ in five years.

You probably wouldn't ride your Yamaha Venture Royale onto a rocky beach but we would
to the cover shot… Randy Goss topped the
Indy Mile… David Bailey won the AMA/Wrangler Super Series Championship by one point
over Mark Barnett at the final round in Millville…
Danny Storbeck, Kevin Foley and Mike Brown
made the headlines at Loretta Lynn's.

Our test of the Yamaha YZ250 was featured
on the cover 20 years ago… Ricky Graham
secured his points lead with a win at the Indy
Mile… Scott Sheak starred at Loretta Lynn's,
so did Schoolboy winner Kevin Windham and
51cc racer James Stewart and Mini racer Ricky
Carmichael.

We couldn't decide so we put just about every
winner on the cover 10 years ago – Ricky Carmichael, Davi Millsaps, Valentino Rossi, James
Stewart, Geoff Aaron, Mike Alessi and J.R.
Schnabel… Beside Alessi, other big winners at
Loretta Lynn's included Sarah Whitmore, Jeff
Emig, Josh Hill, Dominic (Nico) Izzi, Tyler
Bowers and Broc Hepler.
