VOL. 50 ISSUE 32 AUGUST 13, 2013 Mark was jumping across what appeared to be a small roller (which is like two mounds of dirt that you double across). Mark was going fast enough to clear it, but Jon... wasn't. Here's the good part: It wasn't a gentle roller as previously suspected, but a big, deep washout from heavy rains earlier this year. Jon came up perilously short (which is when you don't clear a jump and your front wheel hits the up-side of the landing and you crash straight into dirt – it's painful). He crashed into the face of the washout, and also a bush on the left, and smacked his chin on the bar mount (which is the big metal piece that holds your handlebar to the fork). He knocked himself out for a split second, and then came to at the bottom of the washout with pieces of the bush sticking out of his left arm. That's what happens when you try to follow Mark. Jon came back to camp and took inventory of the damage. His chin was split open, which was hard to tell at first, since his gangly goatee concealed the damage. The facemask of his helmet was cracked, adding to the list of things Jon needs to replace, including that POS YZ, which now has a tweaked front end and punctured radiator. I had to ro-sham-bo my brother to see who would take Jon to the emergency room, since neither one of us wanted to. So obviously, I lost, which brings us to the present. Here I am at Jon's side in the emergency room while the rest of our buddies are sipping beer by the fire watching the sunset. Upon finishing my masterpiece, I proudly signed and dated my work, adding that I would grant them publication rights for internal purposes, and if they wanted any additional info or photos, to contact me via email. What happened then, you ask? Well, we picked up Arby's on the way back from the hospital and feasted on roast beef sandwiches by the fire as we laughed at Jon's haphazardly shaven goatee. And some months later, much to my offense, Jon told me that his insurance claim was denied.
