VOL. 50 ISSUE 28 JULY 16, 2013 "Winning here to me is like winning the World Championship," Lawson said later. Rainey was fourth and Schwantz was fifth with both on the right path to follow Lawson as the next American Grand Prix stars. But it wasn't all good. As it has several times since then, Laguna also came under attack from the Europeans in 1988, most of whom had expected so much more from a Grand Prix in the United States of America. The quote of the weekend… well, that came from five-time German World Champion Anton Mang who said, "If we would have a GP like this in Czechoslovakia it would be understandable because of their financial background, but America is supposed to be superior. I can't believe they found the moon. I think they showed us a trick film." Those who didn't know better thought Laguna Seca was great. After all, it was the best the U.S. had to offer. But it needed work and it got work. Though it seems the Euros (and an Aussie named Casey Stoner) are always quick to point a finger at something when they come here. If Lawson's win was masterful, then Filice's was… well, surprising. This was supposed to be John Kocinski's race to win. He'd shown strongly in Japan at the season opener and he sat on pole at Laguna - his adopted home track. Well, it was also Filice's home and the diminutive Californian simply dominated. Kocinski? Well, he'd get his win a year later with a redemption victory over Filice. But this one belonged to little Jimmy. "The only problem I had was when I started daydreaming about winning and getting a job," Filice said after the race. "They hired me to win the race and I wanted to win the race. I had more confidence today then I've ever had." In addition to Filice and Kocinski, there was another American in the race who people noticed. His name? Bubba Shobert. Riding a Camel-backed Honda in a one-time deal, Shobert finished fifth. Yes, that very first one was a good day at LaCN guna Seca.
