Cent..al Pipeline Harrison wins three at Ross Downs season closer OPEN: 1. Greg Harrison. 250 EX: 1. Terry Poovey (Honl; 2. T.J. Houghton (Vaml; 3. Ken Tolbert (Vam). By Michael S. Lussem Cook wins big at Ross Downs MX COLLEYVILLE, TX, NOV. 1 By Michael S. Lussem Like Babe Ruth, Greg Harrison pointed to the track and said ''I'm going to win three tonight," and so he didl Sparse attendance at the season's closer, by both riders and fans, signalled the end to great motocross and short track racing for the autumn. The 125cc class was combined with the Open Sportsman MXers and gave Greg Harrison his first win of the evening. Harrison, aboard 'his XR250 "moto·thumper," had no competition from the other Open riders, but was pushed for several laps by Dodd Dyson's Clark Wheeled Sports Suzuki 100. Harrison's Motorcycle Specialties/ Remington Enterprises Honda then took flight and he wheelied across the line for the win. Dyson, who had been absent from Ross Downs competition for the last several months, came in for the top spot in the 125cc class. The Automatic Micro short trackers were led once again by five-year-old Greg Teague (Suz) as he put his little bike into the winner's circle for the last time this season. Greg's dad plans to take the little guy to Florida this winter for tbe Mini Bike Nationals. The 250cc Sportsman oval riders took the track and everyone was watching Greg Harrison's Honda CR to see if he'd make good on his boast. But no boast, just fact, Harrison was too fast to catch. Wendell Burton, a Ross Downs favorite, put his Yamaha into a hard-fought second over David Thompson's Thompson Masonary· backed Yamaha. The Open class could have been Harrison's undoing as. he was pitted against Alan Black's Triumph 750, but Black, who had won the heat race, missed a couple of shifts, slipped the groove and eventually retired. Harrison breezed his Honda XR500 to his third and final win of the evening. Some of the best hot shoes in north Texas lined up to contest the 250cc Expert main. National number holder Terry Poovey was again there on his Dallas Honda CR· based machine and an audible sigh went up from the racers. Poovey has been a consistent winner ever since the Winston Pro Series finals and just like so many weeks before, Poovey rocketed to the lead leaving the riders and fans with their collective mouths open. No one came close to the "Pooh-Bear," but a contest was developing in the pack be.tween young T.J. Houghton and his Carters Yamaha, Kenny Tolbert (Yam) and Eddie McCoy (Bul). Houghton, who's just 16, held the groove better and took the second-place check as Poovey grabbed first. Many Ross Downs regulars will not be hanging up their helmets for the winter as Royal Sherbet will be conduct· ing the annual Pit Bike MX series indoors at the Will Rogers Coliseum complex in Ft. Worth. See you therel Results MOTOCROSS YOUTH MINI MX: 1. Donnie Strain (Vam); 2. Ronnie Camp (Hont; 3. FrInk Libeau (Yam). 12510PEN SPORTSMAN: 1. Greg Harrison IHonl; 2. Dodd Oysoo ISUll. COLLEYVILLE, TX, OCT. 25 Under a big yellow harvest moon, the big yellow Suzuki qf Ed Cook was taken to the limit and won both the MX "Dash for Cash" and the 125cc class at Ross Downs tonight. The young racer looked es· pecially mature as he faced stiff com· petition from Steve Purdue (Yam) and Mark Hargis (Suz). Cook developed a tremendous lead after the third lap and became uncatchable. The last event of the evening in MX was the Over 30/0pen Sportsman. combined. Greg Harrison on his Motor Cycle Specialties/Remington En· terprises XR250 Honda took the overall win and found little challenge in his class. The short track classes started out slow, but what a finishl Greg Teague (Suz) continued his domination of Tim Kay (Suz) in the Micro Mini class. Teague, who has had outstanding success this last half of the season, put it to Timothy once again. The 80 and 125cc classes were com· bined, but motor trouble in the main sidelined both Jimmy Tarlton (Yam) and Tubby Dotson (Yam), so the race belonged to Alan Powers' Yamaha 80. Chrissa Douglass (Yam), Ross Downs' only remaining racer of the female persuasion, finished an excellent second. The 250cc Sportsman race was one of new machinery and talent over older machinery and talent, so it was bound to be good - and it wasl Greg Harrison took his new Honda CR250based tracker to the win over Mike George's and Wendell Burton's older Yamahas. But Harrison didn't receive a "gimme" as George and Burton pushed him hard all the way. Harrison came back in the Open class to face Sammy Sweet out of Houston. Sweet, who is only 15, took his Yamaha 360 to the win over the older Harrison's Honda XR500. The 250cc Expert race looked to be a walk for the Trophy Dash winner, Terry Poovey (Hon), but it wasn't to be. The ational number holder ex· perienced apparent transmission problems and found that the parade hOld passed him by. Another National number carrier, Steve Gulledge, took his Dallas Yamaha/Ray-Sue Racing bike to the front and never looked back. And it was good that he didn't as T.]. Houghton's Carters Yamaha and James "Gomer" Pyle's Bultaco were within inches of Gulledge's rear fender. At the finish line it was Gul· ledge by a wheel over the bikes of Houghton and Pyle. • $10,000 RACING WEEKEND o~~ #~.. presents 1f \5'(.,. o 3RD ANNUAL ~~~<> (j~(j~ BOSCH CLASSIC ~ ~~ -. ~f) -- MOTa-CROSS 7:; CPo ct-f") CASH PURSE TO EXPERTS $5000 00 OVER $5000 IN AWARDS TO SPORTSMEN o 00 0') ?J/ SPONSORED BY BOSCH - YOUNG CYCLE SUPPLY - PJ1 ANSWER - LUBRI·TECH - HI-POINT - COORS SIMPSON HELMETS - HONDA HOUSE GATE OPENS 5:30 AM IIGHUP!'E!S: PRACTICE 7:00 AM EXNIIT PER CLASS RACING 9:00 AM PRE ENTRV FEES MUST BE RECEIVED GATE FEE $5.00 ADULT BV NOY!
