.... en M o§. « ~ w By John Shedd Z POMONA, CA., April 4, 1971 The 500cc, Expert class looked like one moto and two dittos. Husky rider, Bill Clements and BSA ace Chuck Minert battled for the lead in that drag race from the green flag to the first corner, Younger, wilder Clements seemed to always get the better as he went to the outside and held it on a little longer. Once out front Clements was uncatchable. But Minert stayed close enough behind to keep him busy. Bill set a blistering pace and Chuck was the only one that could stay near. The spectators had great fun watching Clemen ts leap his Husky at high speed over the man made jump. He did it in fine flying Knievel fashion, and had the jump been high enough he probably could have cleared half a dozen cars. In the 250 Expert chase Clements was again the man to beat, and once again no one measured up to the job. In the fust moto Maico·mounted Dave Smith gave Clements a run for his money. Clements was number one out of the fust corner, but soon lost it on an off-camber hillside corner taking out second place Smith in the process. Smith was quicker to recover and he stormed into the lead with Clements in mad pursuit. It looked like Smith. might go the distance, but Clements caught up, took the lead and never went on his head again. In the second and third motos it was a Clements and Smith battle as it had been in the first, but lap after lap Clements increased his lead and won every moto as he did in the 500 class. The 125cc Experts seemed to be on vacation at Hagntown for the day. Mike W ..J () >- () Garrett was the only one on hand so he ran with the intermediates who were in abudnace. The less experienced riders were no match for Garrett and his blue Penton, and he led them home three times in a row. Pat Flynn was the first intermediate across the line three times and that was plenty good enough for the intermediate win. Talk is cheap as vegetables, but Sanders and his Kawasaki had the credentials to back up his potential Friday night at Trojan Speedway by winning four big main events in the combined IT and flat track motorcycle racing program. It must have been frustrating,' as much so as trying to have your picture taken with Howard Hughes, for the field of over 80 entries as they chased Sanders for the best part of the 30-event card as he took the checkered in the 100 IT, 125 IT, 100 F.T. and the 125 F.T. main events. Earlier he also scored another big win in the 100 F.T. trophy dash. Ironically, Sanders not only had to beat the field, but starter Bob Schoeman as well. As the program, Schoeman walked up to this reporter and stated, "All night long I've tried to catch Sanders backing off or just with his wheel stopped, but so far he just reads me like a book." So now it appears that Trojan fans have another treat by watching Sanders duel with Schoeman. Championship speedway bike rider Larry Shaw easily outdistanced his opposition in the 250 F.T. main to chalk up a victory for his sponsor, Harley-Davidson at Fullerton. In winning, Shaw displayed the form that has carried' the popular rider to many victories as he won over Rick Goade (Bul) who earlier had just won the 250 IT main event. Third went to Mike Clarke (Bul) with Warren Tackett (Bul) and Stan Sweaney (Bul) finishing fourth and fifth respectively. At the start of the 250 F.T. main, a four-bike pile-up brought the fans to their feet. Gunning their machines out of turn one and maneuvering for positions the field suddenly scrambled to avoid four downed riders. In what at first appeared as a serious spill, Mark Revels escaped with only a bruised ankle after being checked out at trackside and giving the fans a few anioux moments. Although the field of riders were reduced in numbers due to opening night at Ascot for the flat trackers, the quality of high-speed action never-the-Iess remained high with ou tstanding performances by Kirk Redding, Tom Doty, Steve Okuda, Bruce Nordstrom, and a rider to keep your eye on, Rich Kouns. Don't forgert, IT and flat track bike racing every Friday night at Trojan Speedway in S.G. (Results on page 34) .aJa Wins . , again. Desert M.C.
