AHOLA CAPTURES MID-SEASON CROWN Photos & story by Vic Ebbutt Before 3160 cbeering, screaming fans, Matchless-mounted Emil Ahola of Tacoma once again proved that he is king of Graham Speedway. Challenged by Dave Palmer of Santa Monica, California, for twenty grueling laps, Ahola managed to retain the mid-season championship July 6. He won $200' for first place in the Expert event. Invaders Stopped Close to the rear wheel of Palmer was Larry Garbe of Vancouver, B.C., and in fourtb place was Dallas Baker of Orange, California. It seemed as though tbe invaders from California had been baited temporarily• There are still two National Championships, one more midseason flat track championship, two two-star TT's, one two-star flat track and one four-star TT yet to be run in the next nine days. Maybe the tables will be turned in these events. Tbe racing was marred by one serious accident in the fifth lap of the Novice Main when Cappy Skeen of Kirkland was thrown nearly 50 feet in a four bike crash which sent young Skeen to the hospital. Tbe race was called at this point by ,AMA Referee Dave Welsh and Dale Silvey of Auburn was declared tbe winner with Gene Simon, second, and John Smitb. third. The Amateur Main was won handily by Dan Holton of Auburn with a 100 ft. lead over second place Ross Roberts of Yakima. Third went to sandy saunders of Tacoma.
