INTERVIEW P62 JOEY SAVATGY SAVATGY, WHO? BY SHAN MOORE PHOTOGRAPHY BY KIT PALMER Y ou may have seen the number-176 JDR Motorsports/ J-Star KTM running near the front of the pack at many of the 250 Supercross main events this year and probably wondered just who that is getting all those great starts and making life difficult for some of the top riders of the class, like Ken Roczen and Eli Tomac. Well, his name is Joey Savatgy (sa-va-chee). The kid from Georgia is making more than a few waves in his rookie year on the circuit and is currently sitting in eighth place in the 250 West Regional Monster Energy AMA Supercross Series points standings. And it would probably be even higher had it not been for a couple of very understandable "rookie" mistakes on the track. But, without a doubt, Savatgy has been catching on quickly to this Supercross thing and has been turning a lot of heads, including ours. Savatgy actually grew up riding minis in Southern California, but his family made the move to Georgia a few years ago to be closer to where they think is the perfect place for young Joey to hone his motocross skills. "When I was about 11, we moved to Georgia to train at Millsaps Training Facility, and that's were I've lived ever since," says Savatgy, whose father maintains bikes for the facility. "I didn't really get real serious with my racing until I moved there. I went to my first amateur national and got WE CATCH UP WITH ONE OF THE HOTTEST ROOKIES IN SUPERCROSS, JOEY SAVATGY The JDR Motorsports/ J-Star KTM team rider is currently eighth in the 250 West Supercross standings.
